"Shot in the head, they jump only once, lie still like dead beer cans." - David Bottoms

It seems that the poem, "Shooting Rats at the Bibb County Dump," by David Bottoms, is discussing a crowd of "hunters" going to kill a bunch of rats. These "hunters" appear to be drunk and eager to get rid of the rats. The rats seem to be stubborn but easy to kill by the description, "shot in the head, they jump only once, lie still like dead beer cans."

The irony is that when the rats are shot they seem to act just like men, described as, "they writhe and try to burrow into garbage, hide... or else drag themselves on forelegs across...toward the darknes...."

It seems that you are on the right track here, but at times your post is a bit confusing. Are the rats and the men alike in anyway?
What does the author mean when he talks about "light"?
Ask yourself why the author wrote this poem.
Your post is a great start!

Rats can really be like people, and some people could be called rats. It seems like some people only care about themselves and are not aware of others needs around them. p.s. rock on!!!
